No. 2 Owens volleyball opens title defense on Saturday

BUTLER, Pa. --- The No. 2 Owens Community College volleyball team (24-6) will begin its postseason journey this weekend with the Mid-Atlantic District A/B tournament at Butler County Community College's Pioneer Field House.

The two-time defending District A/B champion Express (24-6) will compete in one of the toughest district tournaments in the country along with No. 3 Butler County (15-0) and Sandhills (20-5), which received votes in the final NJCAA Division III poll.

The tournament begins on Saturday and will feature three pool play matches. The top two teams based on record following that will advance to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament Nov. 11-13 unless each of those teams go 1-1. In that scenario, there will two more matches on Sunday to determine the top two advancing seeds. 

Those matchups would be determined by:

1. Set record in total competition
2. Point differential based on total competition
3. Coin flip by host region director or representative

The weekend schedule is as follows:

Saturday
11 a.m. - No. 3 Butler County vs Sandhills
2 p.m. - Sandhills vs No. 2 Owens
5 p.m. - No. 3 Butler County vs No. 2 Owens

NOTE: The second and third matches will start 45 minutes following the conclusion of the prior match, so they could start earlier or later than the listed times.

Sunday (if necessary)
11 a.m. - Day one 2nd place vs day one 3rd place
2 p.m. - Advancing team from 11 a.m. match vs day one 1st place

For fans interested in attending, the matches will be played at Pioneer Field House at 107 College Drive in Butler, Pa. 16002. Admission will be $5 and light concessions will be offered.

Over the past five seasons, Owens has combined to go 35-3 in postseason play with two national titles, a national runner-up finish, a third-place finish and a ninth-place finish. Since moving to the Division III level, the Red and White are 17-0 over the past two seasons and have dropped just three total sets over those 17 matches.
