Offensive efficiency leads No. 2 Owens volleyball past No. 10 Finger Lakes, into national semifinals

ROCHESTER, Minn. --- The No. 2 Owens Community College volleyball team (27-7) hit .402 as a team while cruising to a 25-12, 25-13, 25-17 win over No. 10 Finger Lakes Community College (19-7) in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III quarterfinals on Thursday.

With the win, Owens has now won 33 consecutive sets in postseason play dating back to Oct. 26, 2019. The Express will face No. 3 Minnesota State in the semifinals at 8 p.m. on Friday night.

Maddie White opened the match by battering Finger Lakes with five of her 12 kills as the Express jumped out to a 10-3 lead. The 10th-seeded Lakers trimmed their deficit to four, but a pair of kills from Taylor Momany sparked a 6-0 run that gave Owens a 20-10 lead. Later, an attack from Ashley Scott successfully landed as the Red and White took the opening set in double-digit fashion behind a .682 hitting percentage as a team.

The two teams split the first 10 points of the second set before Owens went on a 5-0 run and eventually pushed the margin to 10 multiple times before capturing a 12-point victory. Finger Lakes kept the final set close for a while, capturing a 12-11 lead following a kill from Brandy Morrison. From there, however, the Express scored 14 of the final 19 points of the match to advance to the semifinals.

Individually, Sydnie Meinke had a match-high 13 kills while White (12) and Momany (10) combined for 22 more. All three of them hit over .400, led by Meinke (.650) and White (.526). Emily Fallis led all players with 25 assists while Jessica Dohm chipped in 11. McKenna Babcock had a match-high 12 digs along with five kills and three aces. Scott added eight digs and a match-high three blocks.

Notes
Owens is now 38-3 in postseason play over the past five-plus seasons with two national titles, a national runner-up finish, a third-place finish and a ninth-place finish. Since moving to the Division III level, the Red and White are 20-0 over the past two-plus seasons, and they have dropped just three total sets over those 20 matches.
