No. 2 Owens volleyball knocks off Minnesota State, will play for third-straight national title

ROCHESTER, Minn. --- The No. 2 Owens Community College volleyball team (28-7) will compete for the program's third-consecutive national championship after toppling third-seeded Minnesota State 26-24, 20-25, 25-12, 25-18 in the semifinals on Friday night.

The Express, which won despite having a 34-set postseason winning streak snapped, will face No. 1 Rock Valley (34-7) for the NJCAA Division III national championship on Saturday at 5 p.m.

A balanced offensive attack for Owens was led by Taylor Momany and Maddie White, who each produced a team-high 11 kills. White also led five players in double-digit digs with 20 while adding two blocks and two assists. Momany, meanwhile, added four digs and four blocks (one solo).

Alexis Sarvo (9 kills, .348), Sydnie Meinke (8 kills, 13 digs, 3 aces), Ashley Scott (7 kills, 10 digs) and McKenna Babcock (6 kills, 7 digs) all combined for 30 kills. The duo of Emily Fallis (23 assists, 10 digs) and Jessica Dohm (18 assists) ran the offense while Sydney Alford chipped in 12 digs and four assists.

With their double-doubles on Friday, White (10) and Fallis (6) have now combined for 16 this year.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Owens has a chance to make history as no NJCAA Division III team has ever won three consecutive national championships since the division was formed in 1997. Interestingly, eight teams have claimed back-to-back championships since then, including Rock Valley (1996-97) and Owens (2018-19).

Notes
Owens is now 39-3 in postseason play over the past five-plus seasons with two national titles, a national runner-up finish, a third-place finish and a ninth-place finish. Since moving to the Division III level, the Red and White are 21-0 over the past two-plus seasons, and they have dropped just three total sets over those 21 matches.
