Defense Propels No. 5 Owens Volleyball To Sweep Over Lorain County

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 5 Owens Community College women's volleyball team totaled 20 blocks and hit .314 in a 25-14, 25-16, 25-14 win over Lorain County Community College in the Student Health and Activities Center tonight.

The trio of Tyanna Smith (Bowling Green/Bowling Green, Ohio), Erika Angstmann (St. Mary's Memorial/St. Mary's, Ohio) and Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen/New Bremen, Ohio) combined for 23 kills, led by eight apiece from Smith and Angstmann.

In the first set, Ashley Pleiman (Fort Loramie/Fort Loramie, Ohio) had a team-high four kills, while Carrigan Gray (Liberty-Benton/Findlay, Ohio) produced five assists. Then, in the second set, Angstmann took over offensively and totaled four of the team's 10 kills, while Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) had five digs.

As a team, Owens totaled nine blocks in the second set, led by four from Heitkamp.

In the third set, Smith came up big with five kills, three digs and a block. She hit .500 in the set and also picked up an ace.

Overall, Smith hit .583 to lead the team, while Heitkamp had a team-high six blocks. Pleiman chipped in five kills, while Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.) added four. Gray (14) and Tylutki (13) combined for 27 of the team's 32 assists, while Gyori added three.

Gyori and Angstmann each tied for the team-high in digs with 12, and Gyori had seven of the team's 11 aces. Tylutki and Angstmann each added three blocks in addition to Heitkamp's team-high, while Pleiman, Smith and Lindeman each added two. 

Owens is now 11-2 overall and 3-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. They will host Sinclair Community College at 6 p.m. on Friday before taking on Cincinnati State Technical and Community College at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Notes

Smith has now recorded at least six kills in 11 of 13 matches this year. She also has at least two blocks in all but one match, and she is hitting .396 - a vast improvement from her .147 last year.

Angstmann reached eight kills for the ninth time this year. She has a team-high 115 kills with a .325 hitting percentage.

Heitkamp's six blocks are a season-high, best her total of five against Monroe College on Sept. 4. 

As a team, Owens is now hitting .294 as a team. Meanwhile, they are holding opponents to a .094 hitting percentage.
