No. 5 Owens Gallops Past Cincinnati State, Improves Winning Streak To Nine

Toledo, Ohio---The No. 5 Owens Community College volleyball team won its ninth straight match with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 victory over Cincinnati State in the Student Health and Activities Center (SHAC) this afternoon. 

The win is also the fifth consecutive of straight set fashion for Owens, which is now 13-2 overall and 5-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. They have also won 17 straight sets dating back to the win over Monroe College.

As a team, Owens struggled on offense over the first two sets, but swung at a .320 clip in the final set. Sophomore Ashley Pleiman (Fort Loramie/Fort Loramie, Ohio) led the team with eight kills at a .333 percentage, while another sophomore, Tyanna Smith (Bowling Green/Bowling Green, Ohio), had seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage.

Overall, six players had at least three kills. Christine Tylutki (Monroe/Monroe, Mich.) and Carrigan Gray (Liberty-Benton/Findlay, Ohio) set up the offense well with 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Brooke Gyori (Clay/Oregon, Ohio) had a team-high 17 digs, while Owens had 45 as a team. Niki Polce (Huron/New Boston, Mich.) finished second with eight digs. She has at least five digs in every match this year.

With a large size advantage at the net, Owens produced 18 blocks, led once again by Smith, who had four. She has 12 matches with at least three blocks this year.

In addition to Smith, Devon Heitkamp (New Bremen/New Bremen, Ohio) and Hermiller each had three blocks, while four others had two apiece.

Erika Angstmann (St. Mary's Memorial/St. Mary's, Ohio) chipped in four kills, six digs and two blocks, while Annie Lindeman (Ottoville/Ottoville, Ohio) had two blocks and one dig.

Owens will finish its four game home stand next Wednesday against Lakeland Community College at 6 p.m. They will then hit the road over the weekend to take on No. 1 Parkland College, No. 4 Kirkwood Community College, Des Moines Area Community College and Rend Lake College in the Parkland Invitational. 

Notes

Owens is now 8-0 all-time against Cincinnati State, while having lost only four sets over that span. This was the fifth win at home in the series, including the postseason matchup last year. 

Cincinnati State is being led for the fourth straight season by former Owens volleyball student-athlete Kristy (Bailey) Parrill, who played at Owens in 2005 and 2006.
