Parma, Ohio---The Owens Community College baseball team is making its way to the Region XII tournament after securing a 1-0 win over Vincennes University in the Sub-Region XII tournament championship at Cuyahoga Community College's Western Campus today.
Robbie Bekier (Cardinal Stritch/Toledo, Ohio) nearly went the distance on the mound, while Kyle Bennett (Grove City/Grove City, Ohio) came in to pick up the save in the seventh.
Bekier allowed four hits and four walks through six innings. In the seventh, he struck out the leadoff batter before allowing a single to the next batter. At that point, Bennett entered and induced two consecutive groundouts to short to end the game.
Prior to the seventh inning drama, Jake Weshalek's (Shrine Catholic/Royal Oak, Mich.) one-out home run in the fourth inning gave Owens the only run support it needed.
Bekier improved to 4-4 this year with the win, while Bennett's save was the first in his two-year career.
Looking Ahead
Owens now advances to the Region XII tournament in Battle Creek, Mich. for the second time in three years. They will open up tournament play on Wednesday at 12 p.m. against Mott Community College.
